European Citizens Abroad Advocating for Equal Voting Rights in European Parliament Elections for all EU Citizens
West Chester, PA (PRWEB) March 27, 2014 -- EU citizens currently do not have equal rights to vote in European elections if they reside outside of the member state of origin. With around 13 million European citizens abroad in the EU, and over 10 million outside of the EU, a total number akin to the population of Romania - a member state which is represented by 32 Members of European Parliament (MEPs) - it is important to ensure that their voices are heard.
In January of this year, European Citizens Abroad launched Europeans Abroad Vote 2014 (#EAV2014), an online and field grassroots campaign, to raise awareness of the European elections in May 2014 and encourage EU citizens to vote around the world.
Today, the organization is announcing their online petition for Equal Voting Rights and Procedures for all EU Citizens in EP elections to leaders in the European Council, Commission and Parliament. The petition is available in eight languages.
As said by European Citizens Abroad founder Olivier Nataf, a French national who lives in Philadelphia “ With Europeans Abroad Vote 2014, we are taking an unprecedented step towards changing the way expatriates engage in EU policy.”
No matter their age, nationality, country of residence or party affiliation – they invite all European citizens abroad to utilize their website as a portal through which to learn about the European Union, debate about issues surrounding the upcoming elections, engage in the voting process, and get involved.
