Bay to Breakers is a 12k race that began as a way to boost morale after the devastating 1906 earthquake. While only 218 runners participated in that inaugural event in San Francisco, Bay to Breakers has become a very popular race that now attracts 50,000 runners. The beautiful San Francisco weather surely helps to boost the popularity of the event, and people come from around the country to participate.
Thousands of spectators will line the course, cheering on the runners as they make their way from the start a few blocks from the Embarcadero to the finish line. The route takes runners through Golden Gate Park before finishing at Ocean Beach. There are no qualifying times to enter, but runners must complete the course by noon to be counted.
A fitness expo is held nearby as part of Bay to Breakers. The Expo, which is held at Fort Mason Center, includes exhibits featuring products and ideas to help people live a healthy and active lifestyle. Runners can pick up their race packets at the Expo.
