For many, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade might be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about NYC parades. But the St. Patrick’s Day Parade has its own claim to fame as the 2nd oldest such parade in the country. Since 1762, this event in New York City has drawn large crowds. Recent parades have seen more than 2 million people lining the streets to join in the festivities.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade starts in Midtown at 44th and 5th and ends on the Upper East Side at 79th and 5th. One of the most lasting traditions associated with this event in New York City is having the parade pass by St. Patrick’s Cathedral so that the current Archbishop can review the parade from the cathedral’s steps.

Marching bands, and thousands of other participants bring this historic parade to life, and both locals and visitors enjoy watching the celebration before heading to a nearby restaurant for lunch once the parade comes to an end.

Spectators arrive early to claim the best viewing spots. The parade begins at 11 a.m., but viewers start arriving hours ahead of time in order to be at the front of the crowds when the parade goes by. It is of note that consuming alcohol along the parade route is not permitted.
