New release highlights clone detection capabilities.

Powerful Source Code Analysis

“The enhancements respond to customer demand for these capabilities,” said Roger Hammer, CM evolveIT product owner. “CM First strives to stay ahead of the pack, offering advanced capabilities needed now and for the future."

Answering a robust demand in the marketplace, CM First Group, a provider of IBM mainframe and midrange legacy modernization solutions, has released version 10.1 of CM evolveIT http://cmevolveit.cmfirstgroup.com/. The CM evolveIT COBOL analysis solution is used by enterprise customers worldwide as an integral part of the DevOps cycle. The solution automates the analysis that many shops still do by hand.

New features include clone detection, an important factor in technical debt remediation. CM evolveIT uses an industry-leading, semantic analysis algorithm and parallel processing to identify and manage similar code fragments across large code bases. This feature enables dramatic savings on maintenance budgets by reducing duplication in the code base. It also addresses a common cause of runtime defects – cut and paste errors and missed duplication.

Other version 10.1 enhancements include improved data impact analysis, DB2 and CICS parsing improvements, Java parsing, and a configuration utility.

“The enhancements respond to customer demand for these capabilities,” said Roger Hammer, CM evolveIT product owner. “CM First strives to stay ahead of the pack, offering advanced capabilities needed now and for the future. The CM First ‘secret sauce’ is the depth of evolveIT code analysis and clarity of the visualization around code slicing, clones, and business rules. CM First has long understood that shallow analysis has limited value to architects working in increasingly complex software environments.”

Understanding legacy code and business rules is vital to improving code quality, reducing development cycles, and modernizing applications. Without a deep understanding of application code, it is expensive and risky to take legacy applications into the 21st century by reducing maintenance costs or re-platforming these applications, where critical business rules and dependency information is typically buried in millions of lines of legacy code.

Customers use CM evolveIT to perform the following functions:

  • Harvest business rules for system modernization
  • Perform detailed impact analysis for mass change, for example, increasing a column size
  • Visualize data flows and lineages
  • Improve code quality by managing complexity and removing dead and cloned code
  • Automatically document legacy systems

CM First customers experience significant savings in analysis efforts, reducing months-long projects to weeks.
