Key Observations
Across all major categories in the report, the Q2 2018 numbers indicate a continuation of previous trends:
- The number of Medicare beneficiaries continued its steady growth year over year as expected, with the highest growth coming from western states. The slide dip in growth from Q1 2018 to Q2 2018 reflects the spike in open enrollment that typically occurs in the first quarter of each year. The total number of Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans reached 35%.
- The number of patients leaving their inpatient stays without post-acute care instructions remained steady at approximately 50%. When orders were given, skilled nursing facilities remained the most popular post-acute setting.
- Home health admissions increased 1.6% from the previous quarter, which corresponds to the growth in the number of beneficiaries.
- Hospice admissions continued to grow steadily, reporting growth of 3.5% over the same period last year. Hospice utilization, which measures the use of hospice services among Medicare decedents, also continued to rise, reporting a 1.5% increase over the same period last year and a 2.7% increase over the previous quarter. The number of states now reaching 50% hospice utilization grew from 16 to 28 states.
