The mobile landscape is rapidly changing in Canada, says Numero Uno Web Solutions. According to the recent report, not only is smartphone ownership way up, but also users are becoming more and more reliant on their mobile devices. The report estimates that 56% of Canadians use a smartphone, up from 33% in the first half of 2012. *

The study also found that roughly 80% of Canadian smartphone users say they will not leave home without their mobile device. Mobile devices have become such a core part of the typical Canadian’s everyday life that over half logged on to social media with their phones daily, and 35% said they’d give up TV before having to part with their smartphone. “This study illustrates how indispensable smartphones and mobile devices in general, have become to Canadians, whether it’s for communicating with others, work, or travel,” says Nadia Iaboni, digital solutions manager at Numero Uno Web Solutions. “What’s really interesting is how much of an impact mobile searches have on the Canadian consumer’s spending behaviour. About three-quarters of respondents said they searched for a product or business on their mobile devices, and 27% said they changed their mind about a purchase in a store after completing a mobile search.” (Ibid.)

The study also shows how important it is for small- and medium-sized businesses to have mobile-friendly web sites, says Iaboni. Numero Uno Web Solutions suggests brands develop a simple web site that can be easily navigated as well as avoid using large amounts of text, graphics, and other elements that can make a site slow to load and use.

“Canadian consumers expect their mobile experiences to be seamless,” Iaboni concludes. “According to another mobile survey, 54% of on-the-go Canadian shoppers think less of brands that have sites that are not mobile-friendly.
