Key Learning Event for Veterinary Students held at Lane End Conference Centre
Lane End, Buckinghamshire (PRWEB UK) 26 September 2013 -- The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) selected Lane End Conference Centre to host its first ever experiential learning event in September.
Around 60 undergraduate students and staff from RVC, Bristol, Nottingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities took part in the three-day Veterinary Team Leadership and Professionalism course at the Buckinghamshire training venue.
The first time the course has been offered in the UK, the programme’s content is designed to help veterinary teams (veterinary students, veterinary nurse students and veterinary science students) develop their leadership, business and communication skills so that they can run effective vet practices and provide leadership for the profession in the future.
The course was delivered by leading experts in the UK and US veterinary industry. This included the course keynote speaker, Professor Rick DeBowes from Washington State University and Dr Mandi de Mestre, Senior Lecturer in Reproductive Immunology at RVC.
The undergraduates explored a different theme each day through a combination of traditional teaching and experiential learning methods.
Morning sessions comprised lectures in the conference centre’s large Pavilion room, followed by a freshly prepared lunch in the new dining room.
In the afternoon the group put what they had learnt into practice, taking part in a range of physical and mentally challenging activities - facilitated by the venue’s preferred suppliers Hi5 Events - in the conference venue’s grounds.
Main organiser and course contributor, Dr Mandi de Mestre at RVC, said: “We are really thrilled with how the course went. The students and staff alike found it an inspiring and effective learning experience. The facilities at Lane End provided an excellent backdrop for the delegates learning.
"Several students commented on the value of Lane End’s outdoor fixed elements for the development of team working skills.”
Lane End’s Sales and Marketing Manager Heni Fourie said: “We are delighted that RVC chose to host their first experiential learning event at our purpose-built experiential learning centre.
“Experiential Learning is a relatively new concept in the UK veterinary industry. However, it is something that’s been tried and tested in the US, delivering amazing results.
“Our facilities lend themselves perfectly to this type of interactive training.
“As an established team building venue, we have over 20 activities to demonstrate how certain skills, such as relationship building, can benefit individuals in the workplace.
“Our Pavilion building is also ideal for lectures and has three dedicated break-out conference meeting rooms for smaller group sessions. It also has its own foyer and reception, ensuring clients’ complete privacy whilst working on site.”
Experiential learning is one of a broad variety of activities provided at the centre.
As one of the largest residential conference centres in the UK, Lane End runs a year- round calendar of indoor and outdoor team building events, including Apprentice-style chocolate making courses, laser clay pigeon shooting and fun team events.
