Center for Primary Care Offers Tips to Prevent Breast Cancer
Evans, GA (PRWEB) October 10, 2013 -- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Center for Primary Care is spreading awareness by reminding people of some preventative measures that can be taken.
Breast cancer is the second-leading cancer in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. It is 100 times less common among men. When detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent. Death rates have been declining since 1989 with larger decreases in woman under age 50. It’s believed to be due to an increase in self-awareness and early detection.
To reduce the risk of breast cancer, limit alcohol intake to no more than one drink per day, don’t smoke, control body weight and be active, limit both the dose and duration of hormone therapy, know family history, do monthly breast self-exams, and get screened regularly by a physician or gynecologist.
Some of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer include skin dimpling, puckering or lumping, nipple retraction, discharge, redness, scaling, and tenderness, and enlarged lymph nodes under the arm. When experiencing any of these signs and symptoms, it doesn’t necessarily mean cancer, but it should be brought to the attention of a physician to diagnose it.
Breast cancer can also be reduced by spreading the word. For more information, visit http://www.cpcfamilymed.com, or call 706-650-7563.
