Driver who was intoxicated at the time of deadly 2011 accident with motorcycle will face legal consequences for his actions, according to West Palm Beach personal injury attorney David Glatthorn.

The message that drunk driving will not be tolerated must be sent to all drivers who might consider getting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol.

West Palm Beach car accident attorney David Glatthorn said today that the recent sentencing of a convicted drunk driver serves as a reminder that driving under the influence of alcohol can have tragic consequences.

A Loxahatchee man was sentenced to 11 years in prison for his involvement in a deadly July 3, 2011, accident that claimed the life of a motorcyclist, the Palm Beach Post reports (“Loxahatchee man sentenced to 11 years in prison for crash that killed motorcyclist,” Aug. 13).

“All too often in Florida, we see the grave consequences of someone’s careless decision to drink and drive,” said Glatthorn, who represents victims of negligence and families who lost loved ones in accidents. “The message that drunk driving will not be tolerated must be sent to all drivers who might consider getting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol. Personal injury lawyers represent victims and their families to help them recover compensation, but also to send a message that drunk driving is unacceptable.”

According to the Palm Beach Post news story, the man was driving a 2006 Ford F-350 pickup truck in Royal Palm Beach when he rear-ended a motorcycle that was stopped at a traffic light. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and died at the scene.

The Palm Beach Post said that the driver of the pickup truck had a blood alcohol level of .32, four times the legal limit for Florida drivers. He was charged with DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide.

“Make no mistake about it – drunk driving is illegal in Florida and every other state for a reason. Accidents caused by intoxicated drivers can often result in severe injuries and, as we’ve seen in this tragic case, often have fatal consequences,” said Glatthorn, an auto accident attorney in West Palm Beach. “Florida drivers need to know that not only will they face serious legal repercussions if caught driving drunk. These drivers also need to know that they could have to live with the burden of knowing they took an innocent man, woman, or child’s life because of their actions.”
