New Iberia LA Personal Injury Lawyer James Wattigny Comments On Fatal Car Accident Involving Amtrak Train
New Iberia, LA (PRWEB) July 07, 2013 -- A fatal car accident involving an Amtrak train between New Iberia, LA and Lafayette, LA illustrates just how dangerous railroad crossings can be for drivers, according to personal injury lawyer James Wattigny of Wattigny Law Firm, LLC, in New Iberia, LA.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the woman who died in the train accident,” said Wattigny, whose firm represents injured people and families who lost loved ones in accidents. “Fatal auto accidents of any kind are always a huge shock to family and friends. No one ever expects to lose a loved in a car accident. The pain and grief can be overwhelming.”
The train accident involving a van occurred just after noon on June 26 near the corner of Louisiana Route 182 (Old Spanish Trail Hwy) and Louisiana Route 92 (Smede Hwy) near Youngsville and Broussard, just after a scheduled stop in New Iberia, according to WGNO ABC News (“1 death, 1 injury in Lafayette train crash,” June 26, 2013).
A 51-year-old woman from St. Martinville, LA, was in a van stopped on the railroad tracks when the crossing arms came down in front and behind her, according to KATC 3 News (“Investigation: Train Accidents at Cade Crossing,” June 27, 2013). An Amtrak train from New Orleans bound for Los Angeles then hit Andrews’ van, causing the vehicle to catch fire.
The train warning lights and signals near the site of the crash were working properly, according to Louisiana State Troopers interviewed by KATC 3 News. No one on the train was injured and the train resumed its trip along the Sunset Limited route after an 8 hour delay.
While this accident is under investigation, Wattigny said any number of factors can contribute to a train accident. “Accidents involving trains can happen due to operator error, faulty train crossing signals, poor maintenance of the trains or the tracks,” Wattigny said. “Railroad crossing accidents can be complicated. A personal injury attorney can help protect the rights of the injured and the families of who have lost loved ones.
