Recent Article Detailing Research on 400,000 Year Old Dental Plaque Shows Ancestral Understanding of Healthy Eating and Basic Oral Hygiene, Says Feiz Dental
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 30, 2015 -- According to research by European archeologists that was recently discussed in a June 18th Newswise article, early humans who lived three to four hundred thousand years ago likely knew that eating a balanced diet and limiting smoke inhalation was important to overall health. By examining the chemical compounds in fossilized, ancient dental plaque, researchers were able to find evidence of plant fibers, in addition to the meat that many had previously assumed made up the majority of Paleolithic Age diets. Even more surprising, the article states that the researchers found evidence of “successful smoke management” and “possibly oral hygiene activities such as tooth picking.” Southern California Dentist Dr. Farzad Feiz of Calabasas Dental Group and California Dental Care says that, while the study surely says something interesting about our ancestors, it also says something about people today.
“If people have known the advantages of proper diet, oral hygiene activities, and limiting smoke exposure for 400,000 years, there is no excuse for us to be lacking in these areas today,” says Dr. Feiz. “Most adults know what they have to do to achieve proper oral hygiene. It is just a matter of taking the time to do it.” According to Dr. Feiz, here are three of the things (that even our ancestors picked up on) that most people could benefit by improving:
1. Proper Diet – With all of the processed sugars and added acids in our food products today, it is more important than ever for patients to watch what they eat as it pertains to their oral health. While our ancient ancestors didn’t have access to as many of the foods that can quicken the decay of our teeth, they also didn’t have access to the information that these foods were bad, Dr. Feiz points out.
2. Becoming Smoke Free – While quitting smoking is the furthest thing from an easy task, the medical data against the once popular habit is too great to ignore. Forget the fact that it yellows your teeth, says Dr. Feiz, smoking can take many years off of a person’s life. As shown by the study, even our ancient ancestors recognized the potential dangers of smoke inhalation.
3. “Oral Hygiene Activities” – While today’s oral hygiene activities have advanced far beyond the rudimentary tooth picking that the researchers found evidence of, that is all the more reason to embrace them. With proper brushing and preventative oral care, patients can avoid many of the dental procedures that tend to create anxiety.
To encourage people to take trips to the dentist when necessary, Dr. Feiz designed both his West Los Angeles and Calabasas dental office to maximize patient comfort while still being able to provide top-quality care.
