While some dental procedures are done for cosmetic reasons, says Dr. Feiz, the article highlights the reality that, when care is neglected, a person’s dental health can become a serious concern.

Dr. Farzad Feiz stresses the importance of preventative dental care.

Bi-annual trips to the dentists can go a long way towards stopping problems from getting so serious that they require a trip to the E.R.

According to a June 29 article in USA Today, more and more Americans are showing up in emergency rooms across the country with severe dental health problems. Even more, the article revealed that ER visits for dental problems “doubled from 1.1 million in 2000 to 2.2 million in 2012, or one visit every 15 seconds.” Farzad Feiz, D.D.S. of Calabasas Dental Group and California Dental Care says that this article is a powerful reminder that preventative care is extremely important in preventing dental problems from turning into serious health issues. He notes that the cases similar to the ones outlined in the article, of patients experiencing serious pain or an infection from cavities left untreated, may not be the norm, but they are far from rare. Dr. Feiz notes that bi-annual trips to the dentists can go a long way towards stopping problems from getting so serious that they require a trip to the E.R. Yet, he says that in addition to normal appointments, there are several other things that patients can do to help prevent problems down the line:

  • Use Fluoride Toothpaste – While fluoride is often added to local water supplies, it can also be beneficial to use a toothpaste with fluoride in it for extra protection. Dr. Feiz notes that while dental check-ups often involve fluoride treatments to help strengthen teeth, getting fluoride throughout the year can help fill in the gaps between appointments.
  • Use a Mouth Guard – Teeth grinding, or bruxism, affects a large group of Americans, many of whom do not even realize they are grinding their teeth at night. Dr. Feiz recommends that patients with even minor teeth grinding should wear a night guard to prevent bite degradation. Years of unaddressed grinding can result in emergency room visits like the ones outlined in the article, but it’s important for patients to realize that his can be prevented.
  • Diet and Behaviors – Most people have been told about the dangers of an excessively sugary diet since they were children, notes Dr. Feiz. Yet, he says, sometimes it is important to remember exactly how impactful good or bad habits, such as smoking, can be for overall dental health.

To ensure that his patients feel comfortable receiving necessary preventative care, Dr. Feiz says that he has designed his west LA dental office as a place where care and comfort are the highest priorities.
