Filoli Celebrates Its First-Ever Pride Event With Programming For The Whole Family
From May 30 through June 2, Filoli celebrates its first-ever LGBTQ+ event with programming for the whole family, as part of its commitment to celebrate diversity and become an even more inclusive destination in the Bay Area.
WOODSIDE, Calif., May 13, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Filoli is proud to announce the first edition of Filoli Pride, a four day event uplifting our LGBTQ+ community. Friends, family, allies, supporters, and all are welcome as Filoli Historic House and Garden opens its doors to everyone for an opportunity to showcase some of the amazing local LGBTQ+ organizations of the Bay Area.
"This event is a first for Filoli, perfectly in line with our strategic goal of diversity and inclusion. We are thrilled to open our doors to a wider audience and to offer a safe and welcoming space for the LGBTQ+ community, their allies and their families to celebrate Pride," said Kara Newport, Chief Executive Officer for Filoli.
With this event, Filoli seeks to reach a wider audience by providing a safe space for reflection and remembrance. It also embraces the opportunity to use the beauty of Filoli as a new lens through which families, friends, allies, and all members of our community can experience Pride on a whole new light. Special talks on relevant topics such as gender, inclusion, and family integration will also help us be more culturally competent and sensible to the LGBTQ+ community.
The family friendly event features appearances from LGBTQ+ community institutions such as the Oakland Gay Men's Chorus, a special showing of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, craft tables with the San Mateo Pride Center, the Oakland Pride Center, and Queer Literature readings with Jim Provenzano and James J. Siegel, among others. A Dynasty Night (including a look-alike contest!), family programming, and music are also part of this four-day event.
This event also marks the beginning of Filoli Summer Nights, the second edition of an event series featuring extended hours until 8pm and special programming on Thursdays in the Summer and runs this year from May 30 through August 29.
