This depletion of Social Security could leave many retirees in poverty. I feel policy makers need to look forward and address this situation. People need to realize they could find themselves in a retirement crisis in the coming years.

Chuck Oliver, President of The Hidden Wealth Solution, recently published his latest article that discusses policy reforms to combat the potential retirement crisis in part due to demographic changes.

Oliver stated “Americans are living longer while fertility rates are falling therefore leaving a huge gap in the number of people contributing to Social Security compared to the number of retirees that will be drawing off it. The Census Bureau reported that the average American born today can expect to live dramatically longer compared to life expectancy in the 1950’s. Many retirees desire to maintain their standard of living they had while they were working. According to the Urban Institute, Social Security cash reserves are expected to be depleted by 2035. This is roughly about the time when many Generation Xers will be retiring and many Baby Boomers are counting on their Social Security income big time! This depletion of Social Security could leave many retirees in poverty. I feel policy makers need to look forward and address this situation. People need to realize they could find themselves in a retirement crisis in the coming years. For most Americans 40% of their retirement income comes Social Security. Government needs to take a closer look at how we can balance this transition of Baby Boomers retiring and living longer and the shrinking American workforce contributing to Social Security. It will take time for change to happen so I encourage Baby Boomers and those looking ahead to retirement to take action now and look at how they can grow and protect their retirement savings in addition to relying on Social Security. The discussed solutions are centered around raising taxes on many levels. A key factor many are overlooking is to be mindful that as more retirees draw down their retirement savings from the stock market going from their accumulation phases to conservation and preservation phases that companies will be less profitable resulting in lower returns. This will cause a problem for retirees as they count on these returns to produce their desired lifestyle income. More taxes and less returns are the norms newer retires have and will continue to experience."

For the past two decades Oliver has advised Baby Boomers and retirees on financial planning and wealth management. He teaches them how to navigate the government tax system so they can keep more of their hard-earned savings away from taxes. Oliver added “It’s the simple things that make a huge difference. Creating a Roth IRA, and tax free savings account, waiting to draw off Social Security until it makes the most economic sense for each specific Baby Boomer, signing up for Medicare and creating a health savings account (HSA) are all techniques that Baby Boomers can employ to save more on their taxes. If you are unsure of your tax bracket or unsure how you would file your tax return once you start establishing these tax saving measures, Oliver’s team specializes in how to strategically and properly advise you. Our goal is to help each client be able to maintain their standard of living in their retirement years as they had during their years in the workforce, enabling them to live their best retirement without the worry of losing to unnecessary taxes and market losses.”
