In his time as the head football coach for Chilhowie Warriors of Chilhowie High School, author Ron Bales saw his teams set an incredible record, winning the 1970 Group A State Championship and four consecutive Region C Championships. Decades later and seven of his former players have passed away. He writes “From Young Braves to Mighty Warriors” (published by Xlibris) as a tribute to these ‘fallen warriors,’ a salute to all the young braves who gave up the ‘path of least resistance’ to become hardened warriors who fought against the odds.
This book tells a feel-good story about a group of young football players who were basically humiliated in 1968 and 1969 losing by scores like 50 to 0, 59 to 6 and 50 to 30 in 1969 as sophomores and juniors. Against all odds, they return to win the State of Virginia Group A State Championship as juniors and go undefeated 10 and 0 as seniors. “From Young Braves to Mighty Warriors” shares the story of how they built a championship football program at a small SWVA High School and what it meant to the town, the fans, the players and student body.
“The only losers in life are those poor timid souls who never dare to ‘step into the arena’,” says Bales, “Those who dare to ‘think big’ can overcome major obstacles and achieve success.” “From Young Braves to Mighty Warriors” presents a compelling tale of tremendous sacrifice and work to achieve a common, worthwhile goal. This is a book about paying the price, of not seeking the ‘free lunch,’ to attain greatness.
