Contempo Space TV Furniture Can Reduce Eye Strain Using Bias Lighting
Passaic, NJ (PRWEB) July 29, 2014 -- Many folks enjoy watching their movies and television shows in a darkened room, not unlike watching in the theater on the big screen.
Watching in the dark offers the benefit of preventing glare from light sources in the room. The caveat however, is that contemporary flat screen LCD and plasma TVs contrast very sharply with the surrounding darkness and are of course much smaller than theater screens.
Several studies agree that this causes eye fatigue or eye strain for some people, and suggest backlighting or bias lighting as a solution.
One conclusion published on mayoclinic.org concludes, "When watching television, keeping the room softly lit may be more comfortable than having a high contrast between the TV screen and the surrounding environment."
Mary Cimo of the Lighting Research Center in Troy, NY begins a paper published on Science Daily by stating, "...visual discomfort is caused by the large difference in luminance between the television screen and the room’s dark background."
The research center backs this up with a study using bias lighting, concluding, "...the surrounding illumination resulted in ratings of less visual discomfort, fatigue, and eyestrain...."
The Flat panel Display Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has come to similar conclusions, advising to, "Locate ambient lighting behind the TV, so that it illuminates the wall behind. Such a method of display backlighting is called ‘bias lighting’ and serves to moderate or bias the range of motion in the iris muscles in the eye.... Bias lighting promotes eye comfort during extended sessions of dark adapted viewing."
As flat screens have become the norm, web forums describe a large number of viewers setting up DIY solutions in their media space, sometimes attaching lights to the back of their televisions with velcro and using other creative methods to improve their television lighting.
Contempo Space solves this problem using a more direct approach, offering many entertainment centers & TV wall units with an ambient backlight mounting panel.

This optional panel provides a vertical surface within the TV cavity of the entertainment wall unit, where the television mounts facing forward using a standard wall mount.
The bias lighting is built into the back of the mounting panel, allowing ambient light to reflect off the wall behind the entertainment center and the flat screen television, as recommended by the experts.
