Futures for Children Welcomes New Board Members in Furtherance of Their Mission to Empower American Indian Students through Leadership Development and Mentorship
Albuquerque, NM (PRWEB) July 01, 2013 -- This past year has been one of change and transition for Futures for Children (FFC) beginning with the installment of Teresa C. Gomez as President/CEO in August 2012. The addition of four new board members at the June 22, 2013 Board of Directors meeting is the latest in this progression of “Building on Success” in empowering American Indian students through leadership development and mentoring.
The recently instated board members, who offer varied professional backgrounds and achievements, will be called upon to contribute to the advancement of Futures for Children's Self-Help philosophy, which is based upon the idea that communities have both the ability to define their most pressing needs, and the capabilities and resources to address, meet, and solve those needs.
Following is a brief summary of the newest board members' past and current accomplishments:
Mike Godwin, who resides in Albuquerque, NM, serves as President of Ernest Thompson & Co., Inc., which has contributed furniture, doors, and custom signage for the Futures for Children building. Previously, Mr. Godwin was Senior Vice President and manager of the retail municipal bond department for Shearson Lehman Hutton in New York City. He is also a former chair of the Board of the Albuquerque Museum Foundation. Mr. Godwin is a three-time past member of the Futures for Children Board of Directors, employing his administration expertise as a member of the Executive Committee.
Pam Misener is originally from Virginia and moved to Santa Fe, NM in 2008. She has successfully launched a multi-faceted career in retail banking management, brokerage, mortgage and consumer lending industries. Her past business experience includes employment as a consumer banking manager, the Vice President at First Union Bank/Wachovia Bank, McLean, Virginia, and as a Principal/Private Banker. Additionally, Ms. Misener served as Financial Advisor at Wells Fargo and is currently employed as Financial Advisor with Waddell Reed in New Mexico. She is presently a member of Futures for Children’s DreamMaker Advisory Committee. Ms. Misener has been a Futures for Children mentor for 19 years.
Alicia Smith resides in Santa Fe, NM and is a lawyer by training, having established a career in public policy, working first for the State of Florida and then at the national level as Staff Director of Human Resources at the Governors' Association. In 1993, she established a small health care consulting firm and in 2000 founded Alicia Smith and Associates. The company specialized in the Medicaid program and assisted dozens of states, hospital associations and Medicaid managed care plans in the design and implementation of more effective strategies for delivering health care to disadvantaged people. She is currently a partner in the government consulting practice at Mercer.
Brenda Walsworth recently moved to Santa Fe, NM from Dallas, TX. She works as an independent consultant focusing on change management, business process improvement, and application of technology. Ms. Walsworth is also associated with the Spanish Colonial Arts Museum and is currently heading the revitalization of the museum gardens. Additionally, she works with the museum’s summer children's education program and the Spanish Colonial Market. Her past activities have included involvement with Pink Soles in Motion, an organization that raises funds for Susan G. Komen Foundation. Ms. Walsworth has been mentoring for over 10 years and currently mentors five students.
Futures for Children looks forward to a long and productive association with these talented individuals and thanks them for their contributions to the advancement of Futures for Children’s vision of seeking a world in which social and economic justice includes American Indian people. This exciting year of transition coincides with Futures for Children’s 45 Year Anniversary, which will be commemorated with an Open House Celebration on September 22, 2013. Attendees will be treated to an afternoon of food, beverages, Native entertainment, and an auction of American Indian art. Participants will also have an opportunity to meet with board members as the celebration is scheduled to be held in conjunction with the September Board of Directors meeting.
