Dr. Michael Gabriel Offers Effective Tips to Helping Families Stay Healthy During the Winter Season
New York, NY (PRWEB) February 13, 2014 -- Dr. Michael Gabriel of Gabriel Pediatrics, a Staten Island pediatric care center, recommends effective tips for families to stay healthy during this winter’s flu season.
Once the weather turns cold, outbreaks of cold and flu cases increase ten-fold, making it hard for families to keep all members healthy. Just this past year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that “47 states have declared the incidence of flu to be regional or widespread in their communities and nearly 10,000 cases of H1N1 have been documented.”
Dr. Michael Gabriel of Gabriel Pediatrics, a Staten Island pediatric care center, offers families simple preventative steps they can take to ensure all members stay healthy.
• Surface Disinfection. “It’s extremely important to routinely clean and disinfect commonly touched surface areas within your home and at work,” Gabriel explains. “This will prevent the transmission of cold and flu viruses.”
• Get vaccinated. “Receiving your seasonal flu shot is the most important step in preventing the cold and flu,” says Gabriel. “Many people are afraid to get it because getting the vaccination does hold a miniscule risk of becoming sick. However, the pros of receiving the vaccination definitely outweigh the potential cons.”
• Practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette. “It is vital that you and your family members stay away from those who are sick and definitely stay home if any of you happen to become sick as well,” Gabriel says.
• Wash your hands. “Washing your hands with soap and water often prevents the transmission of harmful cold and flu germs,” says Gabriel. “If you do not have access to a sink, using hand sanitizer is a good alternative.”
