Gary M. Paige, associate attorney at the law offices of Gordon & Doner, will be inducted into the Verdicts Hall of Fame by the Daily Business Review, in conjunction with Verdict Search, on Sept. 10, for two product liability cases he counseled in 2013.

The two cases rank among the Top 5 in the Products Liability category of awards in Florida between 2011 and 2013. Paige will be honored at the inaugural Verdicts Hall of Fame reception in Key Biscayne, Florida on Sept. 10.

In Joan Schoeff Spolzino v. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. (Circuit Court for Broward County, CACE08022608), a Florida jury handed down a $40.5 million verdict against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.

The jury found that James Edward Schoeff was misled by R.J. Reynolds regarding the health effects and additive risks of the company’s cigarettes. The jury awarded $20 million in punitive damages and $10.5 million in compensatory damages to Spolzino, whose husband had died 12 years prior.

In Dorothy Alexander v. Lorillard Tobacco Co. (District Court of Appeal of Florida, Third District, No. 3D12–1593) decided on Sept. 4, 2013, a Miami-Dade County jury awarded the widow of Coleman Alexander $41 million. She was granted $25 million in punitive damages and $16 million in compensatory damages following a three-week trial.

Dorothy Alexander sued R.J. Reynolds, Philip Morris, and Lorillard Tobacco Company, alleging that her husband was addicted to the nicotine in their cigarettes and that this addiction led to his death. The Alexander decision is the largest Post-Engle Tobacco verdict awarded in Miami-Dade County.
