These technological marvels work directly from a vehicles ECU using the CAN (J1979) protocol. Speedhut's latest gauges plug directly into a vehicle's 16-pin OBDII Data Link Connector. This means that no additional wiring is required, providing for an easy installation. For users interested in freeing up the OBDII port, hard wiring is possible into CAN high and low data lines.

Freedom CAN-BUS OBDII gauges operate by receiving signal from the ECU (Engine Control Unit) through the OBDII wiring. and require an ECU that supports the CAN (J1979) protocol. The majority of vehicles 2008 and newer are required to be compatible with the CAN (J1979) protocol. Luckily, even some manufacturers used the CAN protocol before 2008.

The following Speedhut gauges will work with all ECUs with the CAN (J1979) protocol:

  • Freedom CAN-BUS Speedometers will work with all CAN (J1979) protocol compatible ECUs.

  • Freedom CAN-BUS Water Temperature Gauges will work with all CAN (J1979) protocol compatible ECUs.

  • Freedom CAN-BUS Voltage Gauges (Voltmeter) will work with all CAN (J1979) protocol compatible ECUs.

The following gauges have limited support on ECUs with the CAN (J1979) protocol:

  • Freedom CAN-BUS Fuel Level Gauge is NOT supported on all CAN (J1979) protocol compatible ECUs.
  • The following gauges will only work with ECUs (with the CAN (J1979) protocol) made by General Motors (GM):
