ATLANTA (PRWEB) December 12, 2014
Readers can step onto the battlefield with Union and Confederate soldiers with author Gerald Dougherty’s book, “Ann's Letters: A Newly Released Collection of Letters from the American Civil War” (published by iUniverse).
Dougherty collected 32 letters for this book – 19 from soldiers and 13 from their friends or family. These letters provide an intimate look into the minds of soldiers and civilians and gives readers a look into the language and everyday life of the 19th century.
“This is a treatment of Civil War information that hasn't been widely known and is descriptive of home life and family concerns during the Civil War,” Dougherty says.
Dougherty hopes readers will have a new appreciation for modern conveniences after reading of a time when the only way to contact someone was sending a letter and waiting for one in return.
An excerpt from “Ann’s Letters”:
“We’re now in Georgia, near Kingston. We have halted here to wrest(sic) a day or two; and then we expect to resume our journey. Save yesterday, and to day, we have not been from under the sound of the Cannon, for the last two weeks. We have not done much vary (sic) hard fighting, but have been skirmishing considerable. The rebs are in full retreat, and it is unknown to us, where they will make the next stand.”
