GlobalTranz Hosts United Blood Services Blood Drive
Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) August 11, 2016 -- GlobalTranz, a technology-enabled logistics company specializing in freight management services including LTL, Full Truckload, Supply Chain Management, and Domestic Air/Expedited shipping, is excited to announce the hosting of a United Blood Services blood drive on August 16th from 8am to 4pm MST. http://www.BloodHero.com
Arizona has struggled to keep up with patient demand for blood since the beginning of the summer when supplies plummeted to 42% below required levels. While 500 blood donors are needed every day for Arizona hospital patients, an average of 364 donors have given blood daily since July 1, creating a shortfall of more than 1,600 blood donations.
Less than a one-day supply of O-Negative and O-Positive blood is on the shelves for Arizona hospitals. Since it takes 24 to 36 hours to test and process blood before it can be released to a hospital, patients are using Type O blood faster than United Blood Services can provide it.
In emergency situations—when there is no time to determine a patient's blood type—doctors depend on Type O blood to sustain life until the patient can be stabilized. An ample supply gives transfusion options when shortages of other blood types arise.
O-Negative, the universal blood donor: 6% of the population has O-negative blood, but 100% of patients can receive O-negative transfusions. O-negative makes up 12% - 14% of all red blood cell transfusions in Arizona.
O-Positive, the most commonly transfused blood type: 37% of the population has O-positive blood, but 85% of patients can receive O-positive transfusions. O-positive makes up 42% of all red blood cell transfusions in Arizona.
It is predicted that this summer will have the worst nationwide blood shortage seen in many years, so out-of-state resources for blood components are extremely limited.
“An important part of our newly-launched corporate responsibility program is social outreach and we were looking to make an impact quickly,” says Chris Kyriakopoulos, Credit Manager at GlobalTranz. “Arizona has very low blood supplies to keep up the with patient demand this summer and there is a high need right now. So, we partnered with United Blood Services to help. GlobalTranz employees filled 30 donation slots in 3 days. This is what our CSR program is all about—helping those in need and making an impact quickly.”
Due to the high amount of participation, the United Blood Services had GlobalTranz fill an additional 22 slots shortly after filling in the initial 30 with volunteers.
As part of the corporate responsibility program, GlobalTranz has also partnered with Recycle 1 to reduce the company’s carbon footprint and is the first step in a companywide effort to help reduce waste through recycling and energy conservation.
