"Our primary commitment is to improve public safety and we’re proud of the growth we’ve seen with the Gold Shovel Standard program that allows us to fulfill that commitment."

The Gold Shovel Association (GSA) and Oropala, LLC announced today that GSA has completed its transition from contract management by Oropala to direct management by GSA; Oropala will continue to provide the technology suite and select services that support the program. The Gold Shovel Standard is a nationally recognized safety program that is committed to improving workforce and public safety and the integrity of buried infrastructure.

“Our primary commitment is to improve public safety and we’re proud of the growth we’ve seen with the Gold Shovel Standard program that allows us to fulfill that commitment,” said Cheryl Campbell, executive director, GSA. “As GSA takes over the management of the program directly, we are eager to work collaboratively with the various stakeholders in underground construction. We greatly appreciate the hard work that Oropala has done to get the program to this point, and we look forward to continuing to work with this team.”

Oropala was originally contracted in 2016 by GSA to act as a management services company through its formative years. Having matured substantially, the management of GSA will now be handled directly by the association itself. Oropala will continue to develop and maintain technology solutions for the program, and offer onboarding and certification services at the direction of GSA.

“The entire Oropala team is elated to continue supporting GSA and the Gold Shovel Standard program under this new agreement,” said Rick Galyean, CEO, Oropala, LLC. “Our team has worked hard to assist the GSA Board of Directors in bringing the Gold Shovel Standard program to the level of maturity where Oropala could focus on supporting the core technology of the program, and the management of the association could be handled directly by GSA.”

The restructuring brings about a number of notable changes:

  • All parties are now members of GSA on equal footing, including asset owners, excavators, “one-call” organizations, locate companies and municipalities.
  • All membership fees will be paid to GSA rather than through a contract party.
  • Oropala will continue to provide a number of services to GSA members, under the direction of Executive Director, Cheryl Campbell.
