Gov. DeSantis Vetoes Florida Net Metering Bill Saving Solar in the Sunshine State, Green Home Systems Comments on the Win
Gov DeSantis vetoed a net metering bill in Florida that would have completely gutted Florida residents net metering benefits.
LOS ANGELES, May 2, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Gov DeSantis vetoed a net metering bill in Florida that would have completely gutted Florida residents net metering benefits.
The net metering bill, HB 741, proposed in November 2021 and planned to take effect July 2022, proposed to allow utility companies to limit the amount solar owners would be able to sell their excess solar energy created by their systems.
The general idea of the bill according to flsenate.gov is as follows:
"Net Metering; Provides terms for public utility net metering programs after specified date; provides schedule of reductions to net metering rate designs that apply to customers with net metering applications that are approved after specified dates; authorizes certain customers who own or lease renewable generation to remain under net metering rules that initially applied to those customers for specified time; authorizes public utilities to petition for approval of certain fixed charges designed to meet specified purposes; provides conditions under which rules must be initiated if penetration rate of customer-owned or leased renewable generation meets specified threshold; authorizes public utilities to recover specified lost revenues upon meeting certain requirements."
DeSantis wrote in his veto letter, "Given that the United States is experiencing its worst inflation in 40 years and that consumers have seen steep increases in the price of gas and groceries, as well as escalating bills, the state of Florida should not contribute to the financial crunch that our citizens are experiencing."
DeSantis' decision to veto the bill is fantastic news for Florida solar as well as solar across the nation. Since solar companies like Green Home Systems provide services to many states across the country, a win for solar in one state is a win for U.S. solar as a whole.

According to an article published on clickorlando.com, "In Central Florida, 87% of those polled said they support Florida's net metering system. When asked if they would be more or less likely to re-elect a lawmaker who voted to raise the cost for customers to install solar panels, 45% of Central Floridians said they would be less likely to re-elect that person, while 34% said it would have no effect."
"These types of numbers prove how important net metering is in customers decision whether or not to go solar. But this doesn't stop in Florida," shares Hebert, "States like California and Arizona have also been in talks to hinder net metering benefits. Fortunately, none have come to fruition yet, and we need to continue to do our part to ensure they never do."
