San Diego (PRWEB) April 06, 2014
On Sunday, April 6, 2014 at 12:30 p.m., Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Cardiff-by-the-Sea will host its annual Oratorical Festival for teenagers, which is open to the public. The Oratorical Festival is a program that invites youth in middle and senior high school to speak about their faith, their church and their heritage. A list of topics is given to participants from which they choose one topic to give a three to five-minute speech reflecting their viewpoints and research.
Included as one of the many topics this year is "Some people support, others criticize the public declarations of faith of celebrities, athletes, and actors, such as Tim Tebow, Jonathan Jackson, and Troy Polamalu. How do their acts affect your attitude toward being open about your faith?" The junior and senior division speakers from each participating parish in Southern California have advanced to this district competition, and the finalists then advance to the metropolis level.
The top two speakers from each metropolis will then speak at the Archdiocese National Festival to be held in Cleveland, Ohio, June 13-15, 2014. Immediately following the speeches, the judges will render their decisions and each participant will be awarded an Archdiocese certificate signed by the Archbishop. The public is invited to attend this event in which our youth so eloquently express their faith.
Sponsored by the Department of Religious Education of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, this national event is called the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival in honor of the Church Father, Patriarch and Saint of the Church, John Chrysostom. His sermons, often on behalf of social justice and moral reform, were so eloquent and forceful that he was named “Chrysostom” or “The Golden Mouthed.”
