WINDSOR, Ont. (PRWEB) February 28, 2014

The car accident lawyers at Greg Monforton & Partners are warning Ontario residents to drive safely after a snow squall in Barrie, Ontario dropped visibility down to one-eighth of a mile and caused a 96-vehicle pile-up on Feb. 27, 2014.

According to accuweather.com, visibility in the Barrie area dropped within a matter of minutes as wind gusts up to 65 kilometres per hour engulfed drivers in a “wall of white”. In addition to the Barrie-area accident, another 29-vehicle crash was reported near Port Perry as well as two more multi-vehicle wrecks on Highway 89.

Although a number of snow squalls occur each winter, drivers must always be prepared for situations where they may not able to see the road ahead. Additionally, it is advised that drivers do not slam on their brakes or slow down too quickly in severe wintry conditions.

Drivers should slow down gradually during bad weather, use their low beams and avoid entering an area where they cannot see a safe distance ahead. If you are unable to see up ahead, pull off to the side of the road as far as possible; stop your vehicle, turn off your lights, set the emergency brake and turn on your emergency flashers. If a driver is unsure about when the bad weather will pass and needs assistance, they may contact the Ontario provincial police non-emergency line at 1-888-310-1122.

On Thursday Feb. 27, 2014, Environment Canada issued a snow squall warning for various parts of South Ontario and “blowing snow” warning for parts of south Quebec.
