FORT WORTH, Texas, Feb. 20, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Mothers' Milk Bank of North Texas (MMBNT) has moved into a new 13,090 square foot facility, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the nonprofit.
The building in southwest Fort Worth features three times the space of the former location enabling MMBNT to expand its mission of improving the health and survival of premature and critically ill infants through the safe provision of donor human milk.
To accommodate MMBNT's unprecedented 14-year growth trajectory, the Board of Directors launched the organization's first capital campaign in 2016 to purchase property and build a new facility. Titled More Room for More Miracles: The Campaign for Healthy Babies, the $3,067,000 campaign is 99% complete thanks to more than 30 organizations and numerous community supporters.
"Our new home is a dream come true," says Executive Director, Amy Vickers. "Our generous community has made it possible for us to serve more babies, conduct more research, develop new services and launch new community education programs."
MMBNT staff screen all potential milk donors through medical histories and blood tests. Milk donors collect the extra breastmilk their own babies don't need and deliver frozen donations to one of more than 40 depot collection sites.
MMBNT tests, pasteurizes and dispenses donor human milk for fragile and critically ill infants without access to their mothers' own milk. Milk processing includes thawing, nutritional analysis, pasteurization and bacterial testing to ensure safety.
Donor human milk is the standard of care for premature infants without access to their mothers' own milk who have severe feeding problems, intestinal malformations and life-threatening complications such as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Approximately 65 percent of MMBNT's donor milk serves babies in hospital NICUs, while 35 percent serves babies at home.
The new facility is located at 7617 Benbrook Parkway.
