GTT Group, Inc. Releases February 2016 Patent Transaction Market Outlook Including the Q4 2015 Patent Market Index
Portland, OR (PRWEB) February 23, 2016 -- Global Technology Transfer Group, Inc. (GTT Group), the world leader in patent transaction advisory services, today makes available the Q4 2015 Patent Market Index and Patent Licensing Index in the February 2016 Patent Transaction Market Report.
The PMI® closed 2015 at 99.23, an 11% decline since the beginning of 2015. The result was lower than Q4 2014 and dipped below 100 for the first time since Q4 2013. This drop parallels a 27% drop in the number of transactions in Q4 2015 compared to Q4 2014.
A variety of conditions contributed to the drop, including changes in patentable subject matter, judicial considerations, the holiday season, and the trend to high value and highly selective transactions involving fewer assets. The secondary patent market recorded a consistent drop in transaction volume and closed below 1,800 assignments for the first time since Q1 2014.
“We do not foresee the fundamentals of the current patent market dramatically changing into 2016,” says Michael Lubitz, CEO and Chairman of GTT Group. “The patent market will continue to focus on high value, highly selective transactions that fulfill acquiring companies’ strategic and tactical plans.”
The close of Q4 2015 saw a similar drop in the PLI® as seen in the PMI®, with the PLI® ending 2015 at 930. This is the first recorded drop below 1,000 in the three-year history of the index and marked a 28% drop from the beginning of the 2015 calendar year.
Samsung held the top position of Most Active Deal Maker ahead of Intellectual Ventures, with Google and RPX following closely behind the top two for Q4 2015.
Publications releasing this quarter include GTT Group's 2016 Winter Report: Patent Break Up Value (March 2016), and the Annual Deal Review (March 2016).
