Carolina Flipz Offers Gymnastics Classes for Kids with Special Needs
Pineville, NC (PRWEB) January 05, 2016 -- “We’ve been doing this since June, but based on current demand, we have enough interest to offer tailor-made classes to those with special needs, who up until now have been in trial classes,” Davis said. “All special needs students will be given a free, introductory class so they can see if it’s a good fit.”
Davis’ inspiration for offering these classes is her mother, a special needs teacher whose classes Davis used to attend to work with the children. Davis, who was a competitive gymnast for eight years, is passionate about helping children who learn differently feel welcome in an environment like Carolina Flipz, which was voted “Best Girls Gymnastics Facility” in the Charlotte area in 2015 by South Charlotte Macaroni Kid.
“It is especially important to me to have our team kids assist and interact with the special needs students,” Davis said. “Research has proven that children who are exposed to people with disabilities — either directly or indirectly — have more positive attitudes about those with special needs.”
According to Disability Scoop, in a survey of 1,520 children from ages 7 through 16, researchers found that increased familiarity with those who have disabilities led to less anxiety and better attitudes. Additionally, even in cases where children did not have direct contact with a person with a disability, yet observed or heard about a friend’s interaction with such an individual, researchers found there were benefits, with children showing reduced anxiety about those with disabilities and increased empathy.
