True Love Blooms Despite War’s Carnage in Inspiring New Novel
BOXFORD, Mass. (PRWEB) June 03, 2015 -- Eugene Szalla’s novel, “Hart's Liberty” (published by Xlibris), draws inspiration from his father’s tales of life on a Navy ship during the Second World War, the things he saw, his activities that were classified until years later and the social transformations the Greatest Generation saw in America. The tale is a blend of the life of Szalla’s father and that of his contemporaries, an ode to the conflicts their generation endured, their achievements and the changes they experienced in the ensuing years – showing where they were then and now.
The story follows sailors John Hart and David Beal in 1944, on the eve of the Normandy invasion, as they savor their last stint at liberty in London. There they meet Sally, a beautiful artist, who brings them together in ways the sailors never thought possible, allowing their friendship to deepen into a soul-searing love. After these tender moments come the carnage of D-Day, which separate John and David, and leave each one believing that the other is dead. For years, they lead lives of quiet desperation, but fate has other plans and the heroes, now octogenarians, find a second chance to regain what they lost—if they can overcome the forces standing in their way.
This tender and uplifting love story shoots right to the core of bigotry, tolerance, and diversity, examining with a fresh perspective the public and private wars everyone fights and illuminating the triumphant resilience of love. The subjects of LGBT military personnel, the social progress that has occurred over the years, the challenges faced by some in their struggle to embrace not only themselves, but also those they hold dear and how these relate to both young people and elders – these are the powerful themes and messages Szalla respectfully and lovingly conveys in this poignant yet ultimately heartfelt and inspiring novel.
“There is a large population of humans who are on the fence as to who they are and who they can love. Hopefully this story will give them the courage to do something about it,” he says.
