Dr. Farzam has been providing invaluable at-home care to his patients for years.

According to Los Angeles house call physician Dr. Michael Farzam, house call medicine provides for a great many advantages that can be taken advantage of by all patients.

An article published November 8th by National Public Radio (NPR) followed the daily work of upstate New York house call doctor Roberta Miller as she visited her mostly homebound patients to provide them with medical care in their home. The article explains how Dr. Miller and house call doctors across the country play an extremely important role in caring for those who are homebound, or those who would otherwise benefit from care at home rather than in a hospital. In fact, according to Los Angeles house call physician Dr. Michael Farzam, house call medicine provides for a great many advantages that can be taken advantage of by all patients. He notes several advantages that can improve the medical care of homebound and non-homebound patients alike:

  • Homebound Patients – For patients with restricted mobility, Dr. Farzam explains that house call medicine is an obvious solution. In fact, he notes that the healthcare needs of homebound patients is one of the main reasons why house call visits still constitute a percentage of doctor-patient interactions during the decades since the tradition of at-home care has declined.
  • Mobile Patients – Dr. Farzam explains that, even for patients who are perfectly capable of bringing themselves to a doctor’s office, house call medicine still carries many advantages. The first of which, he notes, is patient comfort and convenience. He explains that a number of his patients simply feel much more comfortable, safe, and cared for when the doctor visits their own home. He also explains that a visit from the doctor can also be a great convenience for busy professionals that do not have time to leave the office, or LA visitors who do not want to undergo the daunting task of visiting navigating the hospital system in an unfamiliar city. He also notes that, convenience aside, house call medicine can also give the doctor a fuller picture of the patient’s life, leading to an overall higher quality of care. The article notes one particular instance where Dr. Miller noticed canned soup in a patient’s cupboard whose sodium contents exceeding what the patient should be consuming in their medical state. Dr. Farzam notes that these little things are quite common with house call medicine, but they would rarely be explored during a standard visit to the doctor’s office.
