The conference brought together leaders from diverse business sectors, non-profits, and legal experts to discuss the necessity of employment background checks and the challenges posed by some of the EEOC’s recent enforcement actions. As PreCheck’s Vice President of Compliance Vu T. Do explains, “With employers’ use of background checks under scrutiny, we fear our regulators, law makers, and even the average citizen may forget the basic notion that employment background checks serve a very important purpose, especially within the healthcare space. We were very excited that one of our most esteemed clients, Memorial Hermann Health System of Houston was featured in the business panel and gave voice to healthcare employers.”
Sachin Bhandari, Assistant General Counsel, Labor and Employment for Memorial Hermann, articulated the healthcare organization’s critical reasons for running criminal history. “We conduct background checks to make sure we are hiring the right people for the particular job at hand. We also have an obligation to safeguard our patients, employees, and visitors. Finally, we maintain significant amounts of confidential information and we owe it to our patients that we will treat it with the utmost care, and that starts by hiring well.”
Bhandari served on a panel with business leaders from the aerospace and security industries and the non-profit sector. What is abundantly clear in listening to his fellow panelists, Bhandari notes, is that “regardless of industry, the importance of background checks in the hiring process is paramount.” Hearing each employer share their screening programs and implementation experiences, Bhandari notes “most employers are trying to do the right thing by hiring the right people while maintaining compliance with the myriad of local, state, and federal rules affecting background checks.”
One of the main objectives of the criminal background checks conference at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is to support informed policy discussion and development relating to background check regulation and enforcement.
