Replacement by LEDs in Outdoor Lighting Leads to Decline in High Intensity Discharge (HID) Bulb Sales, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.
San Jose, California (PRWEB) November 26, 2013 -- Follow us on LinkedIn – High Intensity Discharge (HID) bulbs represent the most common lighting technology in outdoor, commercial and industrial applications. Sodium vapor lamps are predominantly used in street lighting, while metal halide bulbs are widely used in high-bay and low-bay fixtures in large light quantity areas such as warehouses, factories, etc. Though originally intended for high-bay/high-ceiling and outdoor applications, use of HID bulbs spread to retail applications with the introduction of Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH) bulbs that offer superior color rendering than its predecessors. CMH bulbs are also cannibalizing the share of high pressure sodium (HPS) bulbs in outdoor applications, especially street lighting. In addition to the preferred white light, CMH bulbs are touted to significantly cut down annual electricity consumption of streetlights and also last approximately 2-3 years longer than HPS bulbs.
The 2007-2009 economic recession resulted in a slowdown of the HID bulbs market. Public infrastructure cutbacks resulted in cancellations and postponement of upgrade projects involving street lighting systems, thus contributing to the decline in growth during the period. The market however recovered in the year 2010, supported by post-recession resurgence in growth fundamentals such as recovery in GDP growth, employment rates, incomes levels, discretionary incomes, rise in consumer/business confidence, and rebound in manufacturing, construction and infrastructure development activity, among others.
HID enjoys a strong position in street lighting, where LED lighting is yet to penetrate in a significant way. LED based street lighting is not considered competitive for the present. However, with continued research and technological advancements, LED bulbs are expected to become the ideal alternatives to HID bulbs in the future. The transformation is expected to take place in a phased manner spread throughout the coming decade. In the interim, manufacturers of HID bulbs are leaving no stone unturned to improve the performance of the bulbs.
While HIDs are expected to be cannibalized by LEDs in the outdoor/street lighting segment, in industrial applications, the threat comes from high intensity fluorescent bulbs. High-intensity fluorescents are competing head on with HIDs in industrial, commercial and institutional lighting, especially in ceilings more than 15 feet high. Newly developed high-intensity fluorescent bulbs with specially designed reflectors have enabled the bulbs to go beyond the 15 feet limitation and compete directly with HID bulbs in this segment.
Additionally, HID bulbs are facing impending threat from high efficiency plasma lights. Advanced plasma light sources offer numerous benefits over HIDs as well as LEDs. Lower maintenance costs and rugged architecture for long burning life make high efficiency plasma bulbs an ideal replacement for incumbent HID. High-bay interior luminaires include lighting in warehouses, garages, gyms, retail stores, among others, where the floor to ceiling height is more than 6 meters. In these applications, due to the height factor, maintenance cost is generally high and high efficiency plasma light bulbs are expected to offer significant savings on this front because of their longer lifespan.
