Succeed Management Solutions, LLC has released two updated HIPAA training courses covering the essentials of the Privacy and Security rules. HIPAA violations can be costly, and a data breach can permanently tarnish an organization’s reputation and be very expensive to remedy. Facilities that do not comply with the HIPAA Privacy Rules are breaking the law.

A major medical gas company was recently ordered by a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administrative Law Judge to pay over $200,000 in penalties for HIPAA Privacy Rule violations. One of the company’s employees had taken PHI (Private Health Information) documents. Additionally, the employee had abandoned these documents after changing residences. Further investigation revealed that other employees were “routinely removing PHI” from the company. The company was found to have “inadequate policies and procedures in place to safeguard patient information” (from, 02/02/2016).

Succeed’s HIPAA Privacy course focuses on the use and disclosure of protected health information (PHI), the administrative safeguards to be taken by covered entities, the individual rights of the management of their health information, and how the rule interacts with state laws. The HIPAA Security course explains the administrative, physical, and technical safeguards that are necessary to protect an individual’s electronic health information.
