Brownsville, TX Car Accident Lawyer Ken Tummel Comments on the Long-Term Impact of Hit and Run Accidents
Brownsville, TX (PRWEB) November 10, 2013 -- A recent hit and run accident serves as a strong warning to drivers that driving drunk and fleeing the scene of a crash can have long-term consequences to accident victims, says Ken Tummel, a car accident attorney in Brownsville, TX at Tummel & Casso.
“Hit and run accidents involving pedestrians and large, moving vehicles can be particularly catastrophic, and we wish the young man involved in this accident a safe and speedy recovery,” Tummel said. “This accident should serve as a reminder to all drivers that driving under the influence of alcohol can cause severe injuries, and that fleeing the scene of an accident can have serious legal repercussions.”
According to Action 4 News (“Hit-and-run victim speaks about nearly losing his life,” October 21), an alleged drunk driver struck 21-year-old Gilbert Perez and immediately fled the scene of the accident, which occurred as Perez was walking along the 1100 block of Southbound Expressway 77 in Brownsville.
Action 4 News said that Perez was released from the hospital in mid-October, about six weeks after the accident left him with severe injuries to his legs that required the surgical installation of three rods. However, the article reports that Perez’s road to recovery could last much longer, as he faces mounting medical bills and hasn’t been able to return to work.
In his first interview since the accident, Perez told Action 4 News that although he felt lucky to be alive, he couldn’t understand how a hit and run driver could leave an injury victim at the scene of an accident.
“Often times, pedestrians who fall victim to hit and run accidents are left with serious injuries that require extensive physical therapy, result in massive medical bills, and threaten a victim’s ability to earn an income,” said Tummel, a car accident lawyer in Brownsville, TX. “However, driving under the influence of alcohol can impair a driver’s judgment to the point that they not only cause a serious accident, but choose to flee the scene in fear of getting caught.”
Tummel said that not only are drunk driving and fleeing the scene of an accident illegal in Texas, but that accident victims could be entitled to collect compensation to help pay for the damages they’ve suffered as a result of the accident.
