Mary loved running her daycare center and was content with it for 15 years. That said, she still wanted something more. She decided being an administrative sponsor for the state’s child and adult food program was next on her list. While she and her husband, George, expected there would be startup costs, they never knew what it would eventually cost them – a four-year prison sentence.

In author Holly Clayton’s new book, “’Second Chance’: ‘Women Behind Bars’” (published by Trafford Publishing), she details Mary and George’s story, one of court hearings, prison and loss.

“Second Chance” chronicles Mary’s battle with the legal system, beginning with the describing of her and George’s ambitions to become state sponsors for the food program. She goes on to describe the process of becoming a sponsor, the claims made by the IRS regarding tax fraud and the many facets of prison life.

An excerpt from “Second Chance”:

“Mary and George were told to learn by, “trial and error”. The only training that was available for the administrative sponsor’s was how to fill out an application form for the child and adult food program. The trial and error that Mary thought was right put her in prison for four years. Mary and George thought the training program would go over on how the State wanted the books kept for the company, but they did not, and we was told to do the books the way we thought they needed to be done.”
