LOS ANGELES, June 10, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- MedTech Breakthrough, an independent organization that recognizes the top companies and solutions in the global health and medical technology market, today announced that it has selected Hologic, Inc.'s ThinPrep® Integrated Imager as winner of its "Best New Imaging Technology Solution" award in the 2019 MedTech Breakthrough Awards program.
Over 500,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year across the globe (1), and while the cancer is largely preventable if detected early, screening poses a significant challenge that involves looking at tens of thousands of cells under a microscope to identify abnormal changes.
Hologic's ThinPrep Integrated Imager makes automated imaging of Pap tests more broadly available to laboratories and cytologists in the United States. The ThinPrep Integrated Imager combines the power of computer-assisted imaging and the ease of dual slide review into a single, automated microscope, bringing increased sensitivity for cervical disease detection to laboratories of all sizes.
"Hologic has a long track record of developing innovative solutions that have transformed the world of medical imaging and diagnostics," said James Johnson, managing director, MedTech Breakthrough. "By leveraging their expertise in this area and blending the best of computer imaging technology and human expertise, the Hologic ThinPrep platform is a true 'breakthrough' solution worthy of industry recognition. Congratulations to the entire Hologic team on their well-deserved industry recognition with this 2019 MedTech Breakthrough Award."
The mission of the MedTech Breakthrough Awards is to honor excellence and recognize the innovation, hard work and success in a range of health and medical technology categories, including Robotics, Clinical Administration, Telehealth, Patient Engagement, Electronic Health Records (EHR), mHealth, Medical Devices, Medical Data and many more. This year's program attracted more than 3,500 nominations from over 15 different countries throughout the world.
"With the ThinPrep Integrated Imager, Hologic continues our commitment to innovation to empower women to live healthier lives everywhere, every day." said Tom West, president, Diagnostic Solutions division at Hologic. "By combining state of the art medical image analysis with automated microscopy we are proud to continue to progress in our quest to improve cervical cancer screening."
Dual Review screening has been proven to reduce false negative rates, allowing for greater confidence in test results (2). With Dual Review screening, computer-assisted automation pre-screens slides and identifies areas of interest on the slide that may contain an abnormality based on size and darkness of cells.
When experienced cytotechnologists review ThinPrep Pap test slides that have been scanned using the ThinPrep Integrated Imager, the areas of interest are identified for interpretation, helping cytotechnologists focus their interpretive skills where they matter most. The system scans an entire patient sample in approximately 90 seconds and identifies the areas of the slide that are most clinically relevant for the reviewer to make a diagnosis.
