Hope For The Warriors and K9s for Warriors Work Together to Meet the Needs of Today’s Veterans
Annandale, VA (PRWEB) April 18, 2014 -- Hope For The Warriors® (http://www.hopeforthewarriors.org) and K9s for Warriors (http://www.k9sforwarriors.org) have created a new working partnership to better support the needs of today’s veterans. Together, the two nonprofits will aim to work together to better support those service members and veterans that are struggling with PTSD. Hope For The Warriors® is a national nonprofit organization that assists post-9/11 service members, their families, and families of the fallen who have sustained physical and psychological wounds in the line of duty. K9s for Warriors is dedicated to provide service canines to our warriors suffering from post-traumatic stress as a result of conflicts and war after 9/11.
K9s for Warriors matches service members and veterans to a service dog to help manage the challenges of PTSD. The nonprofit reviews all requests for service dogs carefully to ensure that a veteran is fully prepared to handle the responsibility of owning and training a service dog. When a service member is chosen, they agree to attend three weeks of training and follow up annually.
Some veterans are not immediately prepared to take on the responsibilities of owning a service dog. In those cases, the service members will be referred to Hope For The Warriors® and their Clinical Health & Wellness Programs. Through Clinical Health & Wellness, veterans are assigned a care manager who will help the veterans make the necessary steps towards complete wellness—physically, psychologically, financially and more.
Hope For The Warriors® also receives requests from service members who are seeking a service dog. In the past, service dogs have been given to veterans through the A Warrior’s Wish® Program. Moving forward, Hope For The Warriors® will refer service members with PTSD to the expert staff and volunteers with K9s for Warriors.
“Hope For The Warriors® believes that each service member, veteran and military family has the same goal—to move past their injuries and struggles and achieve an improved level of total wellness for their family,” Tina Atherall, Hope For The Warriors® executive vice president said. “Our two organizations recognize that granting a service dog to the veteran at the right time can be one important step in achieving that wellness and restoring hope. Our partnership with K9s for Warriors is an opportunity to work together and support that next step.”
