The Montagu Arms Hotel in Hampshire Welcomes New Kitchen Gardener
New Forest, Hampshire (PRWEB UK) 29 June 2014 -- The award winning Montagu Arms Hotel will welcome its new Kitchen Gardener next month. The hotel is dedicated to using seasonal, free-range ingredients sourced from selected local suppliers and the hotel’s very own Kitchen garden.
The hotel’s Michelin Star Chef, Matthew Tomkinson, devises menus which take full advantage of the abundance of quality local produce found in and around the New Forest.
Organic and sustainably produced vegetables and herbs are sourced from The Montagu Arms Kitchen Garden Project which is now in its third year. The project has seen a transformation of a formerly derelict plot of land behind the hotel, into a home for 24 chickens and a thriving kitchen garden.
In order to keep their home grown produce flourishing, the hotel has elected to take on a dedicated gardener. From next month the hotel will be welcoming the new Kitchen Gardener, Barry Daniel.
Having previously worked at Pennington House in Lymington for many years, Barry has over 25 years of nursery and gardening experience on his CV as well as a genuine passion for conservation.
Currently the Kitchen Garden grows carrots, runner beans, chard, beetroot, spinach, Jerusalem, artichoke, sweet peas and asparagus. More recently courgettes, marrow, purple kale and cucumber have been planted.
Head Chef Matthew Tomkinson, considers the New Forest his larder and he claims to be very proud of the hotel’s Kitchen Garden:
“The climate near the coast provides a perfect balance of sunshine and rain for growing tasty fruit and vegetables. Our own Kitchen Garden at the Montagu Arms produces vegetables and herbs for use in our dishes at The Terrace Restaurant and Monty’s Inn, whilst our flock of chickens provide our guests with the best free range eggs for our menu.”
He added “Free-range organic produce is not just better, because of its purity and freedom from additives but because it tastes a lot better too and I’d love people to eat at The Terrace, and know they’re in Hampshire, know who’s cooking the food and that it’s respectful to the place and the environment.”
The garden has brought in many awards for the hotel including the Considerate Hoteliers Award 2012 and 2013. The Considerate Hoteliers Awards acknowledges hotels who proactively engage in sustainable and green initiatives within the industry. In particular it praises hotels who invest in ways they can minimise their effect on the environment now and in the future.
The Montagu Arms is situated in the heart of the historic village of Beaulieu, in the New Forest National Park. The Hotel is widely regarded as one of the top places to stay and dine in the south.
