The Crescent-News article written by AP Sports Writer Kristie Rieken on 10/19/2013, provides details on the highlights of “Bum’s” career, including two AFC Championship games between 1975 and 1980. He famously said, “There’s two kinds of coaches, them that’s fired and them that’s gonna be fired.” Bum was fired from the Oilers in 1980 after losing to Oakland in 1980. Honoring the deceased will be his wife, six children and almost two-dozen grandchildren. In honor of a man who fought hard throughout his life, celebrates the life of Coach Phillips.

Bum, born Oail (pronounced “Awl”) Andrew Phillips, Jr., in 1923, was a World War II veteran. He played football in college for both Lamar Junior College and Stephen F. Austin. After graduating, he spent about two decades coaching high school and college football before moving to the AFL in 1967.

He may be best known for his iconic white Stetson and his folksy “Bumisms.” He adopted the nickname “Bum” because his sister couldn’t pronounce “brother” so it became “bumble” and was then shortened to “Bum.” “I don’t mind being called Bum,” Phillips once remarked, “just as long as you don’t put a ‘you’ in front of it.”

By all accounts, he treated his players well, eschewing long practices, and was not above handing out praise to other coaches. He famously said about either Bear Bryant or Don Shula, depending on which version ascribed to, “He can take his’n and beat your’n, or he can take your’n and beat his’n.” Phillips was a Texas cowboy, who happened to know a lot about football.
