More than 60 million people suffer from diabetes in the European region with an expected increase in prevalence. In light of the burgeoning diabetes epidemic, pattern scanning has become an indispensable tool for the retinal surgeon.
Pattern scanning lasers, which were first introduced in ophthalmology during the previous decade, represent a major advancement in the treatment of retinal disease. Not only do they save time for the physician and help to streamline patient flow, they also reduce treatment discomfort for the patient.
Pattern scanning technology uses millisecond pulse durations, which allows physicians to achieve the desired therapeutic effect whilst minimising patient discomfort. These millisecond pulses dramatically reduce both vertical and horizontal thermal diffusion (especially to the choroid) of the laser energy. The result is targeted burns with minimal collateral damage to surrounding tissue, and a limited risk of macular edema.
The Rapide™ has been developed specifically for the application of pattern scanning laser technology. Unlike other systems on the market, which have been adapted from conventional single-shot photocoagulation and provide limited precision, visibility and patient accessibility due to the use of external adapters, the Rapide™ delivers more reliable – and faster – system performance.
