IRVINE, Calif., July 10, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Opportunity Zone Expo is proud to announce that the nation's top Opportunity Zone official, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson, will deliver the keynote address at the company's upcoming New York conference on Aug. 9, 2019.
In addition to heading the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Carson serves as chairman of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council, a body created by President Donald Trump in December 2018 that focuses on Opportunity Zone. The council has representatives from more than a dozen federal agencies who work together to encourage investment and development in distressed American communities.
In addition to Carson, Scott Turner, executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council, will also deliver a keynote address. Turner is a former Texas House of Representatives member who also spent nine years playing for the NFL.
"We are excited to have high-caliber speakers like Secretary Carson and Scott Turner headlining our New York expo," said Ali Jahangiri, founder of the Opportunity Zone Expo. "Their remarks will give all attendees new insight into this exciting frontier of American investment possibilities, tax savings and community revitalization."
At the expo, attendees — who will include fund managers, attorneys, real estate developers, tax specialists, investment banks and government officials — will participate in workshops and educational panels. Subjects will focus on the various rules, trends and best practices regarding Opportunity Zones, Qualified Opportunity Funds and related investment and capital-raising panels.
In addition to New York, another expo is scheduled for Aug. 12 in Chicago.
Past Opportunity Zone Expos have taken place in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Past keynote speakers have included former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt, California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, U.S. Congressman Mark Amodei (R-Nevada) and former Congressman Keith Rothfus (R-Pennsylvania).
About Us
Headquartered in California, the Opportunity Zone Expo mentors industry leaders about beneficial tax incentives through the Opportunity Zone community development program established by Congress under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. Specifically created within the act are Opportunity Zones, which are low-income communities that are attractive for investment because they offer tax incentives to investors. There are 8,700 zones in all 50 U.S. states, five territories and Washington, D.C.
Investors to the zones can defer capital gains tax by 10 percent after 5 years, 15 percent after 7 years or pay no tax after 10 years. The law also allows investors to pool their money investment into special Qualified Opportunity Funds.
