Save Ukraine Now Issues Plea for Emergency Support to Alleviate Humanitarian Crisis
Tucker, GA (PRWEB) December 30, 2014 -- Save Ukraine Now (http://www.saveukrainenow.org), a charitable organization formed to alleviate Ukraine’s humanitarian crisis, today issued a plea for emergency support as the situation in the eastern region has worsened with the onset of winter.
The UN reports more than 1,100,000 people have now been displaced by the conflict, and UNICEF estimates 1.7 million children are affected. SUN is delivering food, blankets, medical supplies and the basic necessities of life to the war-torn regions of eastern Ukraine.
Dr. Gary Kellner, President of Save Ukraine Now, said, “The number of refugees in Ukraine is skyrocketing as Russian forces continue to destabilize the region. As the temperature drops, the need for heat will soon become as great a threat to survival as hunger. It is heartbreaking to see all these innocent people at risk of death just to satisfy Vladimir Putin’s obsession to reconstitute a Soviet-style empire.”
Dr. Kellner provided some additional statistics. In one week alone, 105,000 new refugees were registered. UN officials estimate up to five million people will require some form of humanitarian aid by the end of the year, with about half of them elderly, the most vulnerable to the cold.
Foundations, churches and individuals have already contributed to SUN, but the organization is seeking additional emergency support. Reports of the worsening situation have spurred the organization to make an additional plea due to the effects of winter.
Save Ukraine Now is coordinating closely with current relief organizations to ensure the most efficient provision of its supplies. Approximately 12,000-to-15,000 local congregations will serve as a distribution network while the Ukrainian Office of Presidential Administration will provide trucks and security.
