Hurricane Maria Causes Urgent Medical Supply Need in Puerto Rico
Westport, Connecticut (PRWEB) September 30, 2017 -- “The devastation in Puerto Rico in the aftermath of hurricane María is incomprehensible and indescribable. The situation is getting worse by the hour. My family, friends and the incredible people on my island are suffering. Ninety percent of all communications were down and there was 100% loss of power including most hospitals. They are making very slow progress as the infrastructure was destroyed. At the moment, ports are starting to open slowly, radar systems are down so only very few humanitarian flights are going in and out of the main airport. As you can imagine, they have tremendous needs such as fuel, construction materials, generators and so many more. As an American raised and educated in Puerto Rico prior to training at the Yale Eye Center. It was my duty to answer to the call into action made by Dr. Marietta Vazquez, Infectious Disease specialist at the Yale School of Medicine. Together with Dr. David de Angel of Puerto Rico Rises and a vast number of Puerto Rican Yale physician colleagues we took the task of spreading the word of the medical needs, particularly at the University Pediatric Hospital. Thus far we have been lucky enough and able to gather 15,000 pounds of medical supplies and basic medications including antibiotics, IV fluids and surgical supplies. Everything that Puerto Rico needs has to be shipped via air or sea and this poses a tremendous challenge. This effort put me and my colleagues in touch with the local Department of Health, different federal agencies, airlines, airports and most importantly with doctors on the ground in the entire island. From the latter, we have heard words of desperation in terms of the medical needs as they are quickly running out of the most basic medical and surgical supplies. We are asking for any additional help in donating and/or shipping supplies directly or through your contacts.”
