Make Sure Your Heating System Is Ready for Winter – Tip Sheet by Portable Rental Solutions

Tips to help businesses prepare their heating system for colder weather.

With colder weather just around the corner, now is the time for businesses to ensure their heating system is working properly, says Shane McCourt, regional sales manager for Portable Rental Solutions (, a leading provider of temporary heating and cooling systems.

“You don’t want to wait until the first cold snap to realize your heating system isn’t working,” says McCourt.

McCourt has created a tip sheet to help companies check their heating system.

He offers the following advice:

1. Give your system a test run. Run your system for a few minutes and make sure it can reach your desired temperature.

2. Clean or replace filters. Dirty filters reduce airflow, making your heating system work harder.

3. Clean heating ducts. Make sure your ducts are free of punctures or breaks that will leak air. Also make sure your ducts are still well-insulated to prevent heat loss.

4. Check your blower belt. A loose blower belt means your system won’t push warm air efficiently.

5. Consider a new thermostat. Replacing an old-school thermostat with a newer, programmable model can save you money. Programmable thermostats let you cut back on heating during the evenings and weekends.

6. Have a backup plan. Even with preventative maintenance, systems can still fail because of age, electrical problems or other reasons.

McCourt says that it can be difficult to find a repair technician during a cold wave, when overuse causes many systems to fail. It can also take days for the technician to order replacement parts. Companies should know where to find an emergency heating system if that happens.

McCourt, whose company rents a range of portable, self-contained heating and cooling systems, says it’s better to ready a contingency plan in advance.

“Temporary heaters come in many varieties – heat pumps, kerosene heaters, electric heaters – and the right choice depends on your work environment,” says McCourt.

“Do your research now and know what type and size of system you’ll need if you do have a failure,” he says.
