For example, a talking wristwatch can use this method to automatically report the time whenever a user moves or orients his or her wrist to a natural position for listening. A position such as that in close proximity to the ear can additionally facilitate private listening without disturbing others. Furthermore, the wristwatch can report time using personalized audio time components that the user has previously recorded, so that reporting is in a custom voice or language. In such applications, accelerometer-based control of audio-reporting watches offer significant advantages over conventional means of control including:
1. The available space for time display is getting smaller as wearable devices become smaller. This makes touchless audio time reporting an attractive alternative.
2. An older person may have difficulty seeing a small time display, whereas it would be relatively easier to hear the low-frequency sound of time reporting. Button-free audio time reporting would therefore be more desirable for an increasing number of older people in our aging population.
3. Under poor lighting condition, such as under strong sunlight or when a person wears sunglasses, it can be difficult for people to see a time display or locate a button. Button-free audio time reporting would be convenient in this case.
4. During certain activities including exercise (such as jogging), a person might not be able to place a time display stationary in front of the eyes or to find and push a button for time reporting. Button-free audio time reporting would be convenient in this case.
5. A person often requires using a finger to push a button for displaying or audio reporting of time, which would be inconvenient when the finger is not free, such as when it is holding an object or driving an automobile. Button-free audio time reporting solves this problem elegantly.
