Home Care Assistance – Halton/Peel Region Remarks on Increasing Vacancy Rates in Ontario Senior Homes
Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) June 25, 2014 -- Home Care Assistance – Halton/Peel Region (http://www.GreaterTorontoHomeCare.ca), the area’s leading provider of non-medical, in-home senior care, is releasing its expert opinion on the rising vacancy rates in Ontario senior homes.
A report has found that the vacancy rate across Ontario senior homes has increased to 13.9% this year, up from 13.4% last year. In addition, just over five percent of seniors over the age of 75 across Ontario and under four percent across the GTA are looking to senior residences. High rent is cited as a major issue preventing seniors to choose elder care within a senior home, with GTA costs being the most expensive in Ontario. “A standard room at a senior home facility within the GTA is over $3,000,” says Rick Heinz, owner of Home Care Assistance – Halton/Peel Region. “Unfortunately, that only gets a senior minimal meals and not much nursing care. The cost alone is not feasible for most seniors or their families.”
Cost is just one of the deterrents of senior homes, but Heinz also acknowledges that having other options, including in-home care, is also a large reason why. In Toronto particularly, more affordable and attractive options exist. However, the number one option for seniors is to receive elder care at home.
“Typically, the slight increase would not warrant a huge concern, but with 18 new senior homes completed in Ontario last year, and four of those being in the GTA, the need to fill these spaces is urgent,” he adds.
“With Home Care Assistance – Halton/Peel Region providing in-home care to seniors across the GTA, we have long recognized the advantages of seniors living at home,” Heinz concludes. "That’s why we understand what needs to be done to assure that seniors live safely and comfortably.”
