NEW YORK, Feb.11, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- While Indianapolis wasn't playing in last Sunday's "big game", Indianapolis area teachers won big in the Teacher Champion Challenge, hosted by DonorsChoose.org and The DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation. DonorsChoose.org, the nonprofit funding platform for public school teachers seeking school supplies, tracked donations to classrooms and calculated dollars raised per student in the cities with teams playing in the pro football playoffs between January 3 and February 3, 2019. As of the end of the challenge, donors gave over $65,000 (approximately $395 per student) to support classroom projects in Marion County, Indiana.
To reward Indianapolis area teachers for winning the challenge, The DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation donated $100,000 to support team sports project requests from teachers in Marion County. The donation fully funded several team sports projects that were already live on DonorsChoose.org, and will provide a 5x match that will quintuple donations from citizen donors to new team sports projects, until the $100,000 donation is fully spent.
"We are very excited for the opportunity to provide much-needed sports equipment and supplies to our students," said Aleesia Johnson, Indianapolis Public Schools Interim Superintendent. Indianapolis Public Schools is one of several school districts in Marion County that will benefit. "We thank our teachers for going the extra mile for their students and the community for their support of these DonorsChoose.org projects and the important lessons being taught outside of the classroom."
In total, donors gave $938,000 to classroom projects from all of the playoff cities during the challenge. To view the complete challenge results and the campaign video featuring Benjamin Watson from the New Orleans Saints, visit http://www.donorschoose.org/teacherchamps.
"We're excited to partner with DonorsChoose.org and Benjamin Watson to support team sports projects in Indianapolis. And while none of these young athletes were playing in the playoffs, seeing their community rally around them and provide an opportunity for them to play sports with their classmates makes them champions in my book," said James Rooney, Executive Director, The DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation.
