Louisville Dentist: Digital X-rays Mean Less Radiation, Better Imaging
NEW ALBANY, IN (PRWEB) April 15, 2014 -- Dr. Ronald Receveur, one of Louisville’s best cosmetic dentists, is calling on those who have been afraid of going to the dentist for fear of exposure to radiation to worry no more.
Dr. Receveur’s dental implant clinic in New Albany, across the Ohio River from Louisville, Ky., is the only practice in Southern Indiana, and one of only about 500 dental offices in the country, using a recently purchased Galileos 3D CAT scanner to diagnose and treat patients with three-dimensional head and neck imaging.
“For those with fear of exposure to radiation, digital x-rays have about 90 percent less radiation than traditional dental x-rays,” Dr. Receveur said.
Digital radiography (digital x-ray) uses an electronic sensor instead of x-ray film to capture and store digital image on a computer. This image instantly can be viewed and enlarged, helping the dentist and dental hygienist detect problems easier and allowing the patient to finish his or her appointment sooner.
“Dental x-rays are essential preventative and diagnostic tools that provide valuable information that you can’t see during a regular dental exam,” Dr. Receveur said. “Without x-rays, problems may go undetected.”
Those problems include:
● poor tooth and root positions
● problems inside a tooth
● problems below the gum line
● abscesses and cysts
● bone loss
● tumors
● decay between the teeth
● developmental abnormalities
Digital x-rays are also convenient as they can be emailed between dentists to get a second opinion or when a patient moves and changes dentists.
But Dr. Receveur’s Galileos 3D CAT Scan goes far beyond traditional x-rays. With CAT scans, also called computed tomography (CT) scans, computers combine hundreds of digital X-ray images to generate high-resolution, three-dimensional views of facial bones, including teeth and jaw bone.
Unlike CAT scans at imaging centers and hospitals, which require patients to lie down, patients sit in an open-air chair for about 20 seconds for the Galileos 3D CAT Scan.
Some ways in which Galileos CT scans are used in dentistry are:
● To determine the quality and measure the density of the jawbone where an implant will be placed
● To see virtual placement of implants using advanced software
● To observe the location of nerves
● To diagnose tumors and diseases early
● To find the most effective placement for implants, including the angle of best fit
● To plan a surgical procedure in advance
● To accurately decide on the appropriate type and size of implants
● To view the orientation and position of each tooth
● To view impacted teeth
