The European Union is one among the first countries to impose regulations on harmful gases such as SO2, NOx, and others. The member countries in the European Union have to comply with these regulations. However, as most of the existing power plants in the U.K. were built back in 70s and 80s, they are not equipped with advanced NOx control equipment such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and SNCR (Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction). The emissions from these plants are controlled by modification in the combustion system or by installing low NOx burners. The first SCR installation in the country was commissioned in 2010 at E.ON’s Ratcliffe Power Plant.

The country is largely reliant on fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas for power generation. 63.1% of the total power generated in 2013 was through coal and natural gas-firing. Most of the existing coal and natural gas-fired power stations are about to complete their operational life cycle. Hence, in order to continue their operations, they will have to comply with the EU emission standards. Therefore, these old power plants have to install and operate DeNOx systems to control emission of NOx gases.

According to the regulations by the European Commission, coal-fired power plants of capacity above 100 MW will have to control the emissions below 200 mg/Nm3. In order to achieve this, the existing plants will have to retrofit SCR systems in the flue gas circuit. Thus, U.K. is potentially a huge market for DeNO¬x systems and services in the next five years, as there is huge capacity of thermal power generation that have to install and operate these systems, in order to continue their operation beyond the life-cycle.
The Industrial DeNOx Systems & Services market is expected to grow at a a CAGR of 6.0% to Reach $6,946.8 by 2019 in terms of value.
